Community Programs
We’re dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Alleghany County. Through our community-focused programs, we work to protect the natural environment and improve access to outdoor recreation for all members of our community.
Sparta Walk Audit
In December 2023, ASTA partnered with AppHealth and the NC State Cooperative Extension to conduct a walk audit in Sparta. Community members walked three routes through town, documenting features that enhance accessibility and safety, as well as areas needing improvement to make Sparta more walkable. The full report can be accessed here.
Since the audit, significant improvements have been made, and progress is ongoing. Updates will be posted here as they become available.
Sparta Greenway Project
A key step in enhancing walkability in Sparta is developing a greenway. To begin, ASTA, in partnership with AppHealth and NC Cooperative Extension, has applied for a $150,000 Design and Engineering Grant from the Great Trails State Coalition. This grant requires 50% matching funds for a total of $225,000. You can help make this vision a reality! Please consider a tax-deductible donation to this important project. For more information or to make a donation, please contact us via email at spartatrails@gmail.com. To donate by check, please mail your check to ASTA, PO BOX 1172, Sparta, NC 28675.

Endangered Tree Initiative
ASTA is proud to support the preservation of endangered tree species in Western North Carolina. Our region is home to unique and beautiful trees, but some face threats from disease, invasive species, and habitat loss. ASTA is working with the community, donors, and other organizations to reforest areas of our region and reintroduce these endangered species. Please check back periodically for updates and details on how you can help.
Sam Brown Park Revitalization
ASTA has submitted a proposal to the County for a revitalization of Sam Brown Park. Check here for further updates.
